Cultural Sensitivity Policy — Nations Atlas Coverage of Contested Topics

Questions about this page

Common questions readers ask about this policy.

We present multiple recognised perspectives side by side, cite sources from all parties, follow UN designations where they exist, note contested status transparently on the page, and never advocate for a single national position on final status. For particularly sensitive coverage we consult paired reviewers with distinct perspectives.

We describe cultures with specificity — situations, contexts, and observed patterns — rather than sweeping statements about entire populations. We say 'many contexts in Japan value restraint' rather than 'the Japanese are reserved.' Every regional page is reviewed by someone from that region as a further check.

We describe religions and religious practices in the terms practitioners use, cover practical implications such as dress code and timing at sacred sites, and never adjudicate theological disputes or describe any religion as more or less rational than another.

A rotating panel of reviewers who are native to, or long-term residents of, the regions we cover. Reviewers are paid per page, credited by name and region on every page they touch, and empowered to require revisions before publication. Applications are welcome — see the contact page.

We refuse ethnic, racial, or religious slurs; content describing any people as inferior; genocide denial; content portraying any group monolithically as violent or criminal; content romanticising colonialism or slavery; and sponsored content misrepresenting a country's human rights situation. This applies to editors, contributors, reviewers, and advertisers alike.
